In a bold move to tackle the growing menace of 'chitta' addiction, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu launched a statewide anti-drug campaign on Saturday. The 'Chitta-Virodh' awareness walkathon, which began from the historic Ridge to Chaura Maidan in Shimla, marked the beginning of this massive initiative. The state government plans to recruit 1,000 Anti-Chitta Volunteers, who will serve as a link between the police and public, to help combat the issue. Sukhu urged citizens to pledge to stay away from drugs and addictive substances, emphasizing that collective action is necessary to make Himachal Pradesh a 'chitta-free' state. Thousands of people, including children, public representatives, officials, and prominent personalities, participated in the walkathon, sending a strong message against drug abuse. Addressing the gathering, Sukhu said the state will confront the challenge of 'chitta' together, stressing that public participation is crucial in eradicating the scourge. The chief minister highlighted the government's three-pronged approach to tackle the issue: awareness campaigns, strict action against the drug mafia, and rehabilitation of youths afflicted with addiction. Sukhu also emphasized the importance of women's involvement in the movement, appealing to mothers to play a pivotal role in awakening society and leading the anti-drug campaign. In a stern warning to those involved in the 'chitta' trade, Sukhu said they have no place in Himachal Pradesh. He assured that the police and government are ready to take action against drug traffickers and peddlers. The campaign aims to completely eradicate 'chitta' addiction, which is silently harming the state's culture, values, and future of its children. Sukhu said a strong public movement has begun to end this menace, and the government is committed to making Himachal Pradesh a 'chitta-free' state.
