IIT Delhi Tops Sustainability Rankings, Leads India's Higher Education Push

In a significant achievement, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D) has secured the top spot in India's sustainability rankings for the second consecutive year, according to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 2026 rankings. With a score of 83.1, IIT-D ranked 205 globally, solidifying its position as India's most sustainable university. The top three spots were dominated by IITs, with IIT Bombay (235) and IIT Kharagpur (236) following closely behind. The rankings also highlighted IIT Delhi's exceptional employability and outcomes, as it secured the 93rd global rank in the category. India's higher education system has made significant strides, with 26 new entries in the rankings. The country is one of only four higher education systems to feature more than 100 universities. Among the 103 Indian universities, 32 improved their rankings, while 15 retained their positions and 30 dropped. The QS rankings also praised Indian universities for their excellence in knowledge exchange and environmental sustainability, with several institutions, including IISc Bangalore and Manipal Academy of Higher Education, making it to the top 700. Jessica Turner, CEO of QS, emphasized the importance of higher education in the fight against climate change, stating that India's role in sustainable development cannot be overstated. The rankings serve as a testament to India's commitment to sustainability and its higher education system's dedication to making a positive impact on the environment.
