India has issued a statement in response to the death sentence handed down to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh. The tribunal found Hasina guilty of 'crimes against humanity' for her alleged role in the ousting of student protesters in Dhaka last year, which led to her ouster. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, and stability. The statement comes after Bangladesh's foreign ministry requested India to extradite Hasina, citing an extradition agreement between the two countries. The International Crimes Tribunal found Hasina guilty on three counts: incitement, order to kill, and inaction to prevent atrocities. She has denied the accusations, calling the tribunal a 'rigged' institution established by an 'unelected government' with no democratic mandate. The court also sentenced Bangladesh's ex-interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in absentia on four counts of 'crimes against humanity'. India's statement emphasizes its commitment to constructive engagement with all stakeholders to promote peace and stability in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh government has described providing refuge to individuals convicted of 'crimes against humanity' as a 'highly unfriendly act' and a disregard for justice.
