Bengaluru, India - Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy emphasized the importance of research in making India and the world a better place. Speaking at the announcement of the Infosys Prize 2025, Murthy called for a stronger national and institutional focus on research to create an aspirational, meritocratic, and competitive research ecosystem. Murthy drew inspiration from historical figures, including Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius and former US President Franklin D Roosevelt, to highlight the significance of research in driving progress. He cited Roosevelt's 'Science - The Endless Frontier' report, which led to the formation of the National Science Foundation in the US and paved the way for America's leadership in scientific research. Quoting a range of thinkers, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Richard Feynman, and Amartya Sen, Murthy emphasized the importance of curiosity, imagination, and persistence in scientific discovery. He noted that research is not just about finding solutions but also about learning from failures and improving continuously. Murthy also stressed the need for India to recommit itself to nurturing research ecosystems, making the country an attractive and competitive place for researchers. He urged the creation of an environment that reveres a hierarchy of ideas rather than titles and offices. According to Murthy, research is the only means to fulfill the dreams of India's founding fathers and make the country and the world a better place. He called on the Infosys Prize laureates to take on the responsibility of driving research and innovation in India.
