The Union Home Ministry has directed all states and Union Territories to provide telemedicine facilities to prisoners, ensuring they receive timely access to quality medical care. This move is crucial for maintaining the health and well-being of all citizens, including those incarcerated. Telemedicine has proven to be an efficient and cost-effective solution for delivering healthcare services, particularly in prisons where physical transfers can be challenging. By linking prison hospitals with nearby government hospitals through video conferencing, inmates can receive medical consultations and treatment without the need for physical transfers. This approach reduces security and logistical issues, minimizes administrative and financial burdens, and ensures continuity and accessibility of care. The ministry emphasized that early diagnosis and prompt medical attention are essential for preventing the escalation of diseases and reducing the risk of complications.
