New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI)-designate Justice Surya Kant praised the Indian women's cricket team for their maiden World Cup win, highlighting the team's triumph as a powerful symbol of women breaking barriers in various fields. Speaking at the Indian Women's Press Corps (IWPC), Justice Kant emphasized the importance of women having a seat at the table and the space to shape public discourse. The judge noted that women must not only participate in public institutions but actively shape them. He cited the example of women journalists, who have transformed the profession by reporting from conflict zones, leading investigative newsrooms, and bringing diverse social realities into public conversation. Today, women journalists drive change through persistent local reporting, community engagement, and mentorship that strengthens media in regional languages and underrepresented areas. However, Justice Kant also highlighted the challenges faced by women journalists, particularly in the digital age. He noted that new technological tools, such as artificial intelligence, create unique vulnerabilities for women journalists. Deepfakes, manipulated images, and online harassment are often used to silence, discredit, or intimidate women, eroding press freedom and narrowing the diversity of voices in public discourse. To address these challenges, Justice Kant called for industry-wide safeguards, urging media organizations to adopt strong protocols to protect women journalists from harassment and misuse of personal data. He suggested that the IWPC could lead training programs in digital safety and advocate ethical standards in the use of emerging technologies in newsrooms. Justice Kant concluded by urging continued solidarity and collective responsibility in defending the integrity of journalism. He emphasized that the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution must be vigilantly maintained, and that women journalists are not just defining the present but shaping the future and inspiring countless others.
