In a bid to restore order and accountability at Bengaluru Central Jail, the Karnataka government has appointed IPS officer Anshu Kumar as its new Chief Superintendent. This move comes after a series of shocking videos exposed widespread misconduct, security lapses, and VIP treatment enjoyed by high-risk inmates, including an ISIS recruiter and a serial rapist. The appointment follows the transfer of K. Suresh, who was in charge of the prison when the videos surfaced. The government has also suspended two senior officials, Jail Superintendent Mageri and Assistant Superintendent Ashok Bhajantri, amid mounting criticism. Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara has vowed to take strict action, describing the violations as 'unacceptable' in a high-security prison. As part of the reforms, the government has established a high-powered committee to investigate systemic failures within the prison department. The committee, led by ADGP Jitendra, will inspect prisons across Karnataka and submit a report within a month. To address the issues, the government has announced several measures, including the creation of a central command centre to monitor prisons in real-time, regular technical audits, and the recruitment of additional staff to fill critical vacancies. The state aims to break entrenched networks and prevent similar incidents in the future.
