The Congress party is making a strong comeback in Telangana's Jubilee Hills assembly by-election, with candidate Naveen Yadav leading by a significant margin of 19,797 votes after five rounds of counting. This crucial by-election, seen as a popularity test for the state's Congress government, took place on November 11 and has left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) trailing. The by-election was necessitated by the death of BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath in June, and the main contest was between Congress's V Naveen Yadav and BRS's Maganti Sunitha, the widow of the late MLA. The BJP fielded L Deepak Reddy in this seat. With a voter turnout of 48.49% and 1.94 lakh voters exercising their franchise, the by-election has set the stage for an intense competition ahead of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls in December. For the BRS, this by-election is crucial, as the party has been dominating most constituencies in GHMC limits since the formation of Telangana state.
