A high-ranking judge in Mumbai is at the center of a bribery scandal, with authorities alleging that he played a key role in the crime. The judge, Aejazuddin Salauddin Kazi, is accused of instructing a clerk, Chandrakant Vasudeo, to demand ₹15 lakh in exchange for a favorable verdict in a land dispute case. Vasudeo, who was arrested last week, revealed that he had collected the money on behalf of Kazi, according to police. The investigation found that Kazi had a close relationship with Vasudeo, who had been working as a clerk in the same court for the past year. The two men frequently communicated on WhatsApp and had a cordial relationship, police said. The bribery scandal unfolded when a complainant approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) after being asked to pay a bribe. Vasudeo was subsequently arrested, and police obtained a statement from him that implicated Kazi. The ACB then conducted a house sealing panchnama at Kazi's residence, but he was not present. The ACB is seeking permission from the Bombay High Court's Chief Justice to investigate Kazi, who is currently a wanted accused in the case. The investigation is ongoing, with Vasudeo being remanded to judicial custody and a bail application pending. The matter is set to be heard on November 19.
