Bengaluru, Karnataka: Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced on Tuesday that a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir Project will be submitted to the central authorities following the Supreme Court's ruling. The project, which involves building a reservoir across the Cauvery River, has been a point of contention between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Supreme Court recently dismissed Tamil Nadu's objection to the project, calling it premature. However, the court emphasized that the project's approval would depend on considering the state's objections and expert opinions. During a meeting with officials and the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Board of Directors, Shivakumar stated that a fresh DPR will be prepared, which will include details of the forest area that will be submerged. The project office has been set up in Harobele, and offices for the Chief Engineer and Conservator of Forests will be established in Ramanagara. The Mekedatu project aims to provide drinking water to Bengaluru and neighboring areas, as well as generate 400 MW of power. Tamil Nadu has expressed concerns that the project could affect the state. Shivakumar assured that the revised DPR will be submitted to the authorities as per the law, following the necessary corrections. The project's progress will be closely monitored to ensure its smooth execution and address any concerns raised by the neighboring state.
