In a crucial meeting at the residence of All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi, senior Congress leaders from Kerala gathered to discuss the party's strategy ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections. The discussion, which took place on Friday, involved key figures such as state party president Sunny Joseph, Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan, former LoP Ramesh Chennithala, and working president and MP Shafi Parambil. However, the absence of senior party MP Shashi Tharoor sparked speculation that he may be being sidelined for the elections. Tharoor's office cited prior commitments at the Kerala Literature Festival as the reason for his absence, but sources close to him claim he was upset with the party's treatment. AICC president Kharge took to X after the meeting, stating that the 3.6 crore people of Kerala are yearning for change and that the Congress party, along with its UDF partners, is committed to providing progressive, development-oriented, and welfare-based governance. The meeting covered crucial topics such as UDF seat divisions, the contours of the UDF statewide march, and Rahul Gandhi's campaign schedule in the state. The election committee of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee is set to convene on January 27 to finalise candidate selection. In an optimistic tone, state party president Sunny Joseph expressed confidence in the party's chances, citing the recent local body elections as a positive indicator. He also mentioned that there will be seat exchanges between the Congress and IUML based on winnability, with some seats being handed over to the IUML and others to the Congress. The party plans to finalise the list of candidates soon and jump into campaigns. The Congress's strategy for the upcoming elections is expected to be a key factor in determining the party's performance in the state.
