West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed support for a proposal to consolidate Asutosh College, Syamaprasad College, and Jogamaya Devi College into a single university. The plan, which has been a longstanding demand, would bring together the three institutions, which share a common campus. During her visit to Jogamaya Devi College on Friday, Banerjee discussed the proposal with college authorities and agreed to initiate the process after the upcoming Assembly elections. According to officials, the CM has asked the principals of the three colleges to submit a written proposal through local TMC councillor Kajari Banerjee. Asutosh College principal Dr. Manas Kabi said the CM's visit was a 'moment of joy' for the institution, which is over a century old. The merged university would be a significant development for the Asutosh group of colleges, and the CM's promise has been welcomed by faculty members and students alike. While the proposal would have to wait until after the Assembly elections, the CM's support has given new hope to the long-standing demand for a single university.
