A 67-year-old woman from Kolkata's Kudghat area allegedly took her own life after setting herself on fire due to anxiety over not receiving her Special Intensive Revision (SIR) enumeration form. Jamuna Mondal, a resident of Dhalai bridge in south Kolkata, succumbed to severe burns at MR Bangur hospital. Mondal's family claims her anxiety intensified during the SIR process, which aims to clean up electoral rolls by removing duplicates and deceased voters. Her relatives stated that the lack of her enumeration form contributed to her distress. This incident follows a similar case in Kolkata, where a 47-year-old man was found hanging from a tree, allegedly due to work pressure related to the SIR process. Similar reports of deaths linked to SIR anxiety have been reported in several districts of West Bengal and Kerala. The Election Commission of India (ECI) launched the SIR exercise in various states, including West Bengal, to verify electoral rolls and add new eligible voters. However, the verification process has raised concerns about the mental health impact on individuals involved.
