Bihar assembly elections 2025: Maithili Thakur, a popular folk singer and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, has taken an early lead in the Alinagar seat. She is pitted against Rashtriya Janata Dal's Binod Mishra, a local Brahmin leader, in a closely contested battle. The results of the two-phase poll are expected to be declared on November 14. Maithili Thakur, who joined the BJP just two days before the polls, is facing a tough challenge from Mishra, who has built his campaign around employment, rural infrastructure, and welfare for the poor. The Alinagar seat, part of the culturally vibrant Mithilanchal region, has a mixed population and has historically leaned towards the Rashtriya Janata Dal. A celebrated voice in Maithili and Bhojpuri folk traditions, Maithili Thakur rose to fame through social media performances celebrating Bihar's folk heritage. She was fielded by the BJP after replacing the sitting MLA, Mishri Lal Yadav, who was denied a ticket following legal troubles. Binod Mishra, the RJD candidate, has a strong organisational base and is relying on his deep local connect and the party's traditional caste arithmetic to reclaim the seat. With Alinagar set for a contest blending culture, caste, and charisma, the outcome of the poll will be closely watched.
