West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reiterated her support for former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly to become the International Cricket Council (ICC) president. Banerjee expressed her confidence in Ganguly's future prospects during a felicitation ceremony for World Cup winner Richa Ghosh at the iconic Eden Gardens. Banerjee praised both Ghosh and Ganguly, reminiscing about her desire to see Ganguly remain India's captain for a longer period. She also expressed her belief that Ganguly would eventually become the ICC chief, stating that it's not easy to stop him from achieving his goal. Banerjee's support for Ganguly dates back to 2022, when he was removed as BCCI president. At that time, she urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow Ganguly to contest the ICC elections. Banerjee had also questioned the decision to retain Amit Shah's son, Jay Shah, as ICC chair, while Ganguly was denied a second term. It's worth noting that Jay Shah currently holds the ICC chair post, having completed his four-year tenure as BCCI Secretary. Shah was elevated to the post two years after Ganguly's removal as BCCI president. Despite reports of a power struggle within the board, Ganguly and Shah have maintained a cordial relationship in public.
