A gastroenteritis outbreak has claimed six lives and infected 84 people in Mizoram's Lawngtlai district. The village of Kakhichhuah, home to 130 families, has been at the epicenter of the outbreak since November 4, when visitors from Myanmar are believed to have brought the disease. According to Dr. Malsawmtluanga, Medical Officer at Lawngtlai district hospital, most cases were reported in households without access to proper water sources. To combat the spread of the disease, a medical team has been stationed in the village since November 11, providing close surveillance and treatment. The team is urging residents to use boiled or purified drinking water, maintain good hygiene, and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms such as stomach pain and diarrhea are noticed. A similar outbreak has also been reported in Siaha district, with three deaths recorded as of November 13. In response to the situation, Lawngtlai Deputy Commissioner Donny Lalruatsanga has declared Kakhichhuah a containment zone and restricted movement across the Myanmar border for two months. Essential medical supplies will continue to be provided to the village, and health workers have been instructed to maintain strict hygiene practices. The district administration is urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the disease.
