The trip aims to reinforce the 'special ties of friendship and cooperation' between India and Bhutan, built on the foundation of mutual trust, goodwill, and respect. During his visit, Modi will meet with Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. A key highlight of the trip will be the inauguration of the 1,020-MW Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project, a joint venture between the two nations. Modi's visit also coincides with the 70th birth anniversary of Jigme Singye Wangchuck, Bhutan's former king. The Prime Minister will participate in the Global Peace Prayer Festival, where he will offer prayers at the sacred Piprahwa relics of Lord Buddha, which have been sent to Bhutan from India.
