Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee, a Lok Sabha MP, has been the victim of a massive cyber heist. Fraudsters accessed his State Bank of India (SBI) account, siphoning off ₹57 lakh. The account, which was opened when Banerjee was an MLA from Asansol (Dakshin) between 2001 and 2006, remained inactive for several years. However, the fraudsters managed to reactivate it using fake documents, including a superimposed photograph, fake Aadhaar and PAN cards, and a new phone number. Banerjee was informed about the fraud by the branch manager, leading to a formal complaint and an investigation by the Kolkata Police's cybercrime division. The police are currently analyzing the transactions and other details to identify the perpetrators. In an interview, Banerjee expressed his shock and concern, saying, "If this can happen to an MP, what will be the condition of a common man?" The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been reported yet. According to a report, the stolen funds were allegedly transferred to several beneficiary accounts and spent on jewellery purchases and withdrawn through ATMs. The incident highlights the vulnerability of even high-profile individuals to cybercrime, and the need for robust security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
