Murugappa Group's Pillar Arunachalam Vellayan Passes Away at 72

Arunachalam Vellayan, former Chairman of the Murugappa Group and Coromandel International, has died at 72 after a prolonged illness. Vellayan, who played a pivotal role in shaping the conglomerate, will be remembered for his strategic guidance and contributions to India's business landscape. Born in Chennai on January 9, 1953, Vellayan was an alumnus of prestigious institutions including The Doon School, University of Delhi's Shriram College of Commerce, and UK's Aston University and the University of Warwick Business School. He was also honoured with honorary doctorates from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and Aston University. Throughout his career, Vellayan served on the boards of various companies, including Coromandel International Ltd, EID Parry Ltd, and led industry organisations such as the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and the Fertiliser Association of India. He also chaired the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode. Vellayan is survived by his wife Lalitha Vellayan, sons Arun and Narayanan Vellayan, and grandchildren. The Murugappa Group has released a statement paying tribute to his dedication and commitment to the company's success.
