New Delhi: In a significant step towards rejuvenating the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has cleared a slew of major research and infrastructure projects worth over ₹1,000 crore at its 67th executive committee meeting. The meeting, chaired by Director General Rajeev Kumar Mital, focused on data-driven planning, climate resilience, and pollution abatement efforts across the Ganga basin. Key projects approved include a ₹361.86 crore plan to clean the Mahananda River in Siliguri, West Bengal, and a ₹242.56 lakh project to enhance groundwater security in the Ganga-Yamuna Doab region. The committee also sanctioned studies to monitor Himalayan glaciers, create a Digital Twin of the Ganga, and conduct high-resolution SONAR-based surveys to improve sediment management and environmental-flow assessments. To support Yamuna rejuvenation in Delhi, the EC cleared the conveyance of treated sewage from the coronation pillar STP to the river. Additionally, a ₹3.98 crore study on glacier retreat and melt-runoff changes in the Upper Ganga Basin was approved, along with a ₹3.31 crore project to develop a Digital Twin and Water Cycle Atlas for the Ganga basin. The meeting also saw the approval of a 'Youth for Ganga, Youth for Yamuna' initiative to engage over 2.5 lakh students across 200 Delhi-NCR schools in public outreach efforts. The projects mark a shift towards integrating advanced modelling, artificial intelligence tools, and high-resolution datasets into long-term river restoration efforts.
