A daring scam has been foiled in Delhi, with the arrest of two Odisha residents who duped a local rice trader of ₹20 lakh. The accused, identified as Basudev Swain and Deepak Kumar, posed as representatives of a company called Smartvalue Ltd, claiming to purchase rice for testing and future large-scale procurement. According to Delhi Police, the duo, along with another co-accused Amit Kumar Singh, approached the complainant, a northwest Delhi-based rice and food supply business owner. The accused produced fake documents and seals, convincing the victim to supply rice worth ₹20 lakh. However, after the transaction, the accused disappeared, leaving the victim with a significant loss. Further investigation revealed that the documents and seals used by the accused were forged, and they had no connection with Smartvalue Ltd. The police launched an extensive investigation, including technical surveillance and local intelligence inputs, which led to the arrest of Swain and Kumar in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. During interrogation, the duo confessed to their involvement and revealed that they had been committing such offences to earn easy money. The police have charged the accused with cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. Further investigation is underway to identify other victims who may have been duped using this modus operandi and to trace their associates.
