The Directorate of Census Operations in Odisha has kicked off a pre-test for the house listing and housing census in four selected areas of the state. Scheduled to run until November 30, the exercise aims to fine-tune methodologies and tools for the full-scale census in 2027. As part of the first phase of the Census of India 2027, enumerators will visit households in 64 revenue villages across Nabarangpur, Mayurbhanj, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack to assign house numbers and collect housing-related information. This pre-test is not the actual census, but rather a preparatory exercise. Key features of the Census 2027 include a digital data collection system and a self-enumeration portal, allowing households to submit information online. Each house will also be geo-tagged to enable faster processing and dissemination of census data. Enumerators, primarily primary school teachers, will collect details about house conditions, amenities, assets, and other related information. The real census work is expected to begin in April or May 2026, following a notification from the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India. Residents in the identified areas are requested to cooperate with the enumerators during the pre-test period. The data collected during this exercise will help the authorities refine their methods and tools for the upcoming census.
