In a historic milestone, P Viswanathan, a 40-year-old watchman from Kerala's Paniya tribal community, has become the first municipal chairman from his community. Viswanathan, a folk singer and CPI worker, won the general seat in Edaguni with 424 votes in the recent local body polls. The chairmanship of Kalpetta Municipality was reserved for the ST community, and Viswanathan was chosen for the prestigious post. The Paniya community, the largest Scheduled Tribe in Kerala, has traditionally lagged behind in various aspects. Viswanathan, who has now risen to the top, aims to bring about change and inspire his community members. "I wish to bring a change in this. I wish my new position would give my community members some inspiration to come forward," he said. V Haris, a senior CPI leader, expressed confidence in Viswanathan's capabilities, highlighting his win from a general seat. "A member of the Paniya community deserves the post as it is one of the major communities in the district," Haris said. In a heartwarming moment, Viswanathan was seen seeking the blessings of his parents, who were overjoyed by their son's achievement. His mother proudly hugged him, saying, "My son reached to such heights. I am so happy.
