The winter session of India's Parliament has been scheduled from December 1 to 19, as announced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. This unusually short session has raised concerns among opposition parties, who argue that it indicates a lack of government business and an intention to suppress debates. The decision was made by President Droupadi Murmu, who approved the proposal to convene the session. Rijiju appealed for a 'constructive and meaningful' session, but opposition leaders see it as an opportunity for the government to avoid addressing pressing issues. The Congress party's Rajya Sabha chief whip, Jairam Ramesh, criticized the short session, saying it 'conveys a clear message that the Government has no business to transact, no Bills to get passed, and no debates to be allowed.' Trinamool Congress' Rajya Sabha floor leader, Derek O' Brien, also expressed concern, accusing the government of 'Parliament-phobia.' The session will be significant, as new Vice President C P Radhakrishnan is set to debut as the chairman of the Rajya Sabha. The outcome of the Bihar election, which took place recently, may also impact the mood of the parties and the overall productivity of the session. Last year's winter session was held from November 25 to December 20, and it witnessed significant events, including the passage of important legislation and protests over various issues. The government has yet to announce its agenda for the upcoming session.
