Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of 'ease of justice' for achieving true social equity at the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) national conference. Speaking at the event, Modi stressed that justice must be delivered in a timely, accessible, and cost-effective manner, without any discrimination based on economic or social background. "When justice reaches every individual, regardless of their social or financial status, it becomes the foundation of social justice," Modi said. He noted that several steps have been taken to enhance 'ease of justice' in recent years, including the establishment of Lok Adalats and pre-litigation settlements, which have resolved thousands of disputes quickly and at low costs. "NALSA has played a crucial role in bridging the gap between the judiciary and citizens, particularly those who lack representation or familiarity with the justice system," Modi said. He also highlighted the government's efforts to simplify governance and support businesses and citizens through the removal of over 40,000 compliance requirements, decriminalization of 3,400 legal provisions, and repeal of over 1,500 obsolete laws. "The government has also focused on leveraging technology to widen access to justice, including the eCourts project, expansion of video-conferencing in courts, and digitization of filing and summons systems," Modi said. He also emphasized the importance of translating court judgments into local languages to ensure that people understand the law and can comply with it. "Access to justice begins with awareness, and it is essential to enhance legal literacy among vulnerable groups, including women, senior citizens, and marginalized communities," Modi said. He also encouraged law students to work with rural communities and low-income groups to bring legal knowledge to every doorstep and gain a deeper understanding of society's lived realities. Modi concluded by calling for a collective vision for the justice system in India, emphasizing the need for legal institutions, law colleges, self-help groups, and grassroots governance structures to work together to expand legal awareness and strengthen confidence in the justice delivery system.
