PM Modi Proposes Enhanced Connectivity, Border Infrastructure for Bhutan Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited Bhutan, where he emphasized the importance of bolstering connectivity and border infrastructure between the two nations. Building on their existing energy partnership, which has enabled Bhutan to become the world's first carbon-negative country, Modi highlighted several initiatives aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries. These include linking Bhutanese cities to India's rail network, improving road connectivity, and supporting Bhutan's economic development through infrastructure projects such as the Gelephu Mindfulness City. Modi also announced the establishment of an immigration checkpoint to facilitate the entry of visitors and investors. India has committed ₹10,000 crore to Bhutan's five-year plan, focusing on sectors like roads, agriculture, and healthcare. The two nations are also working together on hydropower, solar energy, and other areas such as education, innovation, and space exploration. Modi paid tribute to Bhutan's former king, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who is credited with establishing democratic systems and promoting peace in the region. The prime minister also announced plans to establish a Bhutanese temple and guesthouse in Varanasi, responding to a request from the people of Bhutan.
