Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to release the 21st instalment of the PM Kisan scheme, a flagship programme aimed at providing income support to farmers, on November 19 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The move will benefit nearly 90 million eligible cultivators, with ₹18,000 crore being handed out. As part of his visit to Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, Modi will also launch the South India Natural Farming Summit 2025, which aims to promote sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural practices. The summit will bring together over 50,000 farmers, and the Prime Minister will digitally transfer the cash benefits to eligible farmers from Coimbatore. The PM Kisan scheme, launched in 2019, provides a yearly income support of ₹6,000 to farmers with a valid enrolment, paid in three equal instalments of ₹2,000. According to official data, the previous payout covering the April-July period saw 97.14 million farmers receiving funds under the programme. However, the Centre has intensified efforts to weed out ineligible recipients, resulting in a drop of over seven million beneficiaries for the latest instalment. The government has also launched a drive to include qualifying cultivators under the PM-Kisan programme, with thousands of farmers' accounts being put on hold for verification. The identification of beneficiaries under the programme is the responsibility of state governments, who must adhere to the scheme's guidelines, including income ceilings, income-tax payees, government employees, and individuals with a monthly pension of ₹10,000 or more.
