New Delhi: In a stern call to action, Press Council of India Chairperson Justice Ranjana Desai emphasized the importance of accuracy and truth in journalism over speed and trends. Speaking at the National Press Day function, Desai highlighted the pressing need for journalists to prioritize fact-checking and responsible reporting in the face of increasing misinformation. Desai pointed out that the rapid adoption of technology in mass communication has led to a surge in misinformation, making fact-checking and verification more crucial than ever. 'Journalists must go beyond reporting an event and verify facts, interpret them accurately, and provide context,' she emphasized. The Press Council of India has recently updated its Norms of Journalistic Conduct to promote greater care and responsibility in reporting. Desai urged journalists to exercise restraint when reporting on sensitive topics like religion and the armed forces, where even minor inaccuracies can have severe consequences. Desai also stressed the importance of financial independence for journalists, citing it as a key factor in maintaining press credibility. The Press Council has advised governments to develop group insurance schemes for journalists to ensure their financial security. As the role of artificial intelligence in journalism continues to grow, Desai cautioned journalists to remain vigilant and thoughtful in their use of these tools. 'Technology should aid us in uncovering the truth, not distort or overshadow it,' she said, emphasizing the need for human judgment and conscience in journalism.
