In a significant move, the Punjab Cabinet has approved the creation of a separate cadre of employees specifically for the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). The decision, taken during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, aims to address the issue of Punjab's quota posts remaining vacant in the BBMB. Currently, the board fills these positions with employees from other states. According to Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, the new cadre will consist of 2,458 posts in various departments. This move comes in the wake of a long-standing dispute between the state government and the BBMB authorities over issues such as water sharing and the posting of CISF personnel at the Bhakra and Nangal dams. The creation of a separate cadre is expected to benefit Punjab's employees, who will now be recruited specifically to serve in the BBMB. This decision is a step towards resolving the concerns of the state government and ensuring that its employees are adequately represented in the BBMB. In addition to this, the Cabinet has approved several other key decisions, including the launch of the Navi Dishaa Scheme to address menstrual hygiene and distribute free sanitary napkins to adolescent girls and vulnerable women. The scheme will focus on awareness, education, and behavioural change. The Cabinet has also approved the recruitment of 311 nurses in the health and family welfare department and the revival of 16 vacant posts of child development project officers. Furthermore, the retirement age for administrative posts in the Department of Medical Education and Research has been enhanced from 62 to 65 years, and the dental teaching faculty has also benefited from this change. The Cabinet's decisions are aimed at promoting the welfare of Punjab's citizens and addressing key developmental issues in the state. The special session of the Punjab Assembly, scheduled to be held on November 24 at Anandpur Sahib, will also commemorate the 350th martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur.
