In a bid to make cement more affordable for both manufacturers and consumers, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has launched a new policy aimed at rationalizing freight charges for bulk cement transportation. The policy, which comes into effect immediately, will see the cost of transporting bulk cement reduced to a uniform flat rate of 90 paise per ton per km. The new policy is expected to bring down the cost of cement, promote eco-friendly transportation, and facilitate the setting up of bulk cement terminals across the country. The terminals will enable the transportation of bulk cement from production plants to consumption centers in specialized wagons, making it a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option. According to officials, the Indian Railways has developed a logistics solution for bulk cement transportation using tank containers, which are suitable for multi-modal transportation. The policy will also promote the use of tank containers, which can fill and transport bulk cement to any location without the need for cement bags. The Cement Manufacturers Association has welcomed the new policy, saying it will be a game-changer for the industry. Aparna Dutt Sharma, Secretary General of the association, said that the reforms will fulfill the expectations of the sector, particularly in reducing the cost of cement and promoting eco-friendly transportation. The new policy is expected to benefit the cement industry, which has been facing challenges related to transportation costs and environmental concerns. With the introduction of this policy, the industry is poised to see significant changes in the coming months.
