Chennai is bracing for another round of heavy rains after a brief respite. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, heavy showers are likely in Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Pudukottai districts over the next 24 hours. Thunderstorms and lightning are also possible at isolated locations across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. The North East Monsoon, which began on October 16, has already brought 30 cm of rainfall to Tamil Nadu, as per Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ma Subramanian. The Met department has warned of light to moderate rain in coastal Tamil Nadu and isolated areas of the interior regions, with a possibility of thunderstorms at one or two locations. Fishermen have been advised to stay away from the sea between Saturday and Sunday as squally weather with wind speeds reaching 35-45 km/h and gusting up to 55 km/h is expected to prevail along the Tamil Nadu coast. In the past 24 hours, Tiruchendur recorded the highest rainfall at 8 cm, followed by Oothu, Radhapuram, and Kayapattinam with 7 cm each. In contrast, Tiruppur North, Palladam, Tiruppur South, and Uthukuli recorded the lowest rainfall at 1 cm. For Chennai and its surrounding districts, the forecast suggests partly cloudy skies with light rain expected in some areas over the next 24 hours.
