Defence Minister Rajnath Singh sparked controversy on Sunday by blaming Marxist historians and previous governments for deliberately omitting the contributions of Dalit and tribal communities in India's history books. Singh unveiled a statue of freedom fighter Uda Devi Pasi in Lucknow, highlighting the neglect of many leaders from these communities. Singh criticized the selective inclusion of contributions from only a few families in the freedom struggle, while leaders like Uda Devi Pasi and others from Dalit, Adivasi, and Pasi communities were overlooked. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been working to rectify this by introducing a new book in primary schools that highlights the contributions of these communities. The government has also taken steps to recognize the Pasi community's role in India's struggle for independence. Three women battalions of the Provincial Armed Constabulary have been named after Pasi leaders, including Uda Devi Pasi. A monument is also being built in Lucknow to honor Maharaja Bijli Pasi, a 12th-century ruler from the Pasi community. Adityanath said that Uttar Pradesh played a crucial role in the 1857 revolt against the British, with Pasi leaders making significant contributions. The government's efforts aim to ensure that students are aware of the history and sacrifices of these communities, who have been historically marginalized.
