A devastating blast near the Red Fort in Old Delhi on Monday evening left at least 10 people dead and dozens injured. As investigators piece together the events surrounding the explosion, several key questions have emerged. The explosion occurred at 6:52 pm near the Red Fort, a highly secured area with intense policing. Officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are exploring the possibility that the blast was triggered prematurely, possibly in panic. According to Delhi Police officials, the chief suspect, Dr Umar un-Nabi, had planned the blast in the vicinity of the Mughal-era heritage structure and Chandni Chowk, a bustling shopping area. CCTV footage shows the white Hyundai i20 car, driven by Umar, was in the area for nearly four hours before the explosion. The car stopped briefly near a temple on Netaji Subhash Marg about 10 minutes before the blast. Investigations suggest that Umar may have attempted to trigger the blast near the temple but had to move ahead due to a no-parking zone. This could have led to panic, causing Umar to detonate the device. The investigators are also trying to determine whether the explosion was a premeditated attack or an accidental blast caused by an unstable device. The possibility of an improvised plan and panic-induced detonation are also being examined. Forensic analysis suggests that the bomb was likely hidden inside the car's bonnet. The car's bonnet appeared only partially shut when it was parked at the Sunehri Masjid parking lot in the afternoon. A rope and a sticker-like object were used to close the bonnet, and high traces of ammonium nitrate were found in the car's bonnet area. Initial reports suggested that two people were inside the vehicle, but the latest evidence points to Umar being the sole occupant during the explosion. Investigators are now trying to identify the two men who were seen with Umar on October 29 and determine whether they had any role in assembling the device or aiding Umar's escape.
