The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Rajasthan government and other respondents over a petition challenging the validity of the Rajasthan Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2025. The petition, filed by the Jaipur Catholic Welfare Society, raises concerns over legislative competence and constitutional limitations. The top court, comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, observed that similar petitions were already pending consideration. However, the petitioner's senior advocate, Rajeev Dhavan, argued that the current plea raises distinct questions. The court has tagged the plea with the pending petitions and scheduled a hearing after four weeks. The Rajasthan government has been asked to respond within four weeks, as per the court's earlier directive. This development comes as the top court continues to examine the constitutional validity of anti-conversion laws enacted by several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and others. The court has made it clear that it will consider a stay on the operation of these laws once the replies are filed.
