The Supreme Court has criticized state governments for allowing the sale of whiskey in tetra packs, expressing concern that the cheap, easily available, and deceptive packaging can give school-going children easy access to liquor. This issue came to light during a trademark dispute hearing in which tetra packs of whiskey were presented before the court. The judges expressed surprise and raised concerns about the implications of such packaging. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi argued that major sales of alcohol comprise tetra packs due to their low cost, but the judges questioned the permission for their sale. Justice Surya Kant noted that the tetra packs are extremely easy to carry into schools, colleges, and other educational institutions, while Justice Joymalya Bagchi stated that the state governments are prioritizing revenue over public health. The court directed the parties to consider the issue of tetra packs containing alcohol in the larger public interest, citing the potential harm to people's health due to the lack of warnings and the deceptive packaging.
