Supreme Court Cracks Down on Courtroom Chaos: Focus Shifts to Preventive Measures

In a move to maintain decorum and safety within the Supreme Court complex, the top court has directed the Supreme Court Bar Association and Advocates-on-Record Association to suggest measures to prevent incidents like the recent shoe-throwing attempt by a 71-year-old lawyer on Chief Justice of India Bhushan R. Gavai. The court, led by justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi, emphasized the need for preventive measures over punitive actions, citing the Chief Justice's decision to 'forgive and forget' the incident. The bench has asked the associations to submit their suggestions, which will be considered before issuing directions. The court's focus on preventive measures comes after the October 6 incident, where lawyer Rakesh Kishore attempted to hurl a shoe at the CJI, disrupting the proceedings. The incident sparked widespread condemnation, but the CJI later described it as 'a forgotten chapter.' The bench has also agreed to hear Attorney General R Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to assist in identifying practical measures to prevent recurrence of such misconduct. The court's decision to prioritize preventive action over punitive spectacle aims to maintain discipline and decorum within the court complex, and prevent similar incidents in the future.
