The Supreme Court on Tuesday heard the bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and others accused in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and Additional Solicitor General SV Raju argued that the riots were pre-planned, not spontaneous, and that the accused delayed the trial. They claimed that Khalid and his co-accused used anti-CAA protests as a disguise to trigger nationwide communal riots with the aim of regime change. The Delhi Police maintained that there has been no material change in circumstances to revisit the Supreme Court's earlier decision rejecting Umar Khalid's bail. The case is next scheduled for hearing on November 20. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has asked the Delhi Police to update the status of investigations into FIRs linked to the 2020 North East Delhi riots, with a listing for November 21 on petitions seeking an independent SIT probe and action against police officials.
