In a recent dismissal, the Supreme Court declined to ban non-biodegradable lawyer bands, citing concerns over judicial overreach. The petition, filed by Sakshi Vijay, a lawyer's wife, had raised environmental concerns over the disposal of these cloth accessories. However, the bench, led by Chief Justice Bhushan R Gavai, questioned whether the court should also regulate other personal items like handkerchiefs. The court pointed out that regulating lawyer bands would set a precedent for monitoring other household items and waste management systems, which fall outside the court's domain. Despite Vijay's plea for a nationwide eco-friendly mechanism for collecting and recycling used lawyer bands, the court dismissed the petition, emphasizing the need for judicial restraint in regulating personal attire. The lawyer bands, a distinctive part of a lawyer's uniform, can continue to be worn as before.
