The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for December 2 to consider Tamil Nadu's plea against a Madras High Court order that stayed the state's amendments removing the governor's power to appoint university vice-chancellors. The state government's move was aimed at implementing a recent Supreme Court ruling on the governor's powers in relation to state bills. However, the Madras High Court intervened, staying the operation of the amendments, citing concerns over the appointment process. With 14 out of 22 state universities currently without a vice-chancellor, the situation has become critical. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the governor, suggested that the issue may be addressed in a pending Presidential reference on the governor's powers. But senior advocates Abhishek Singhvi and P Wilson, representing Tamil Nadu, disputed this, arguing that the case can be decided independently. They emphasized the urgency of the situation, highlighting the need for the Supreme Court to intervene and resolve the impasse. The state government has also filed a petition to transfer a related PIL from the high court to the Supreme Court, seeking a swift resolution to the crisis.
