Veteran Trinamool Congress leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray resigned from the Rajya Sabha and the party's primary membership, citing his growing isolation within the party over his demand for an internal inquiry into the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case.

Ray, a founding member of Mamata Banerjee-led TMC, alleged that attempts had been made to shield those responsible in the case, which involved the 2024 rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College.

In a written statement, Ray blamed the TMC's '15-year anarchical rule' for widespread corruption, atrocities against women, and failures in health, education, industry, and law and order.

He closed his statement with the Latin phrase 'Vox populi, vox dei' - 'the voice of the people is the voice of God.'

The resignation marks the first high-profile exit from the TMC's parliamentary ranks since the turmoil engulfing the party began.
