Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan was arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody in an attempted sexual assault case. An actress filed a complaint against him, leading to his arrest in Idukki district. Ranjith claimed innocence to the press, saying the accusations were 'false'.
The Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) has taken action against the filmmaker, recommending the suspension of his membership in the directors' and writers' unions. The police formed a Special Investigation Team after the complaint was filed and verified the allegations before making the arrest.
The survivor was 'traumatised' by the incident and underwent counselling and psychiatric treatment before coming forward with the complaint. The alleged assault occurred on a shooting set, with several witnesses present.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Culture Minister Saji Cherian expressed support for the victim, stating that such acts would not be accepted by the government or society.
